What is a Herniated Disc?
Between each bone (vertebra) in the spine, there are soft, cushion-like structures called intervertebral discs (IVDs). These discs play a crucial role in absorbing shock and supporting the weight of the body, allowing the spine to move flexibly and efficiently. The IVD is a common source of pain for patients struggling with chronic back or neck pain.
Each intervertebral disc has two main layers:
- Annulus Fibrosus (Outer Layer): A tough, fibrous ring that provides structure and strength to the disc.
- Nucleus Pulposus (Inner Core): A soft, gel-like center that helps absorb impact and distribute pressure evenly across the spine.
When the outer layer (annulus fibrosus) becomes damaged or weak—often due to injury, aging, or wear and tear—the soft gel-like center (nucleus pulposus) can push through the damaged area. This condition is known as a herniated or slipped disc.
Nerves around the spine connect the spinal cord to the arms or legs. If a disc herniates and presses on a nerve, it can cause pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness, into the legs(sciatica) or the arms
Symptoms of a Herniated or Bulging Disc
- Low back pain with or without leg pain(sciatica)
- Neck pain with or without arm pain (Cervical Radiculopathy)
- Numbness or tingling in arms or legs
- Weakness in arms or legs
- Pain that increases with movement or activity
- Flare up of reoccurring pain that lasts for days or weeks
