Active Release Therapy in NJ

The physicians and therapists at Performance Ortho recognize that many patients aren’t able to live their lives to the fullest due to the fact that they suffer from chronic or acute pain and dysfunction. Soft-tissue structures, including muscles, ligaments, and tendons, are common pain generators due to scar tissue that will inevitably form in an injured body region. Unless the physician or therapist properly addresses the scar tissue formation, the patient will likely experience an only partial or temporary improvement in their condition.

The Performance Ortho physicians have expertise in many different soft tissue procedures to reduce or eliminate scar tissue. The most conservative treatment procedure is Active Release Technique (ART). In ART, the treating physician/therapist will use their hands in a manual technique to identify regions of dysfunctional muscle, ligament, or tendon tissue. Once identified, the physician/therapist will apply specifically directed pressure over the affected or related anatomical structures while the patient performs specific body movements. Most patients will notice an improvement over several sessions.

We also often encourage patients to participate in physical therapy to strengthen and stabilize the injured soft tissue structures. Since we are a fully integrated interdisciplinary facility, these physicians and therapists work together to benefit the patient with better, faster, and more convenient treatment.

Active Release Technique is useful in treating the following conditions:

  • Rotator cuff tendonitis
  • Golfer/tennis elbow
  • Jumper’s knee
  • Achilles tendonitis
  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Chronic/acute spinal muscle pain and spasm
